"Walk-ins, same-day reservations, and waitlists are not available." That line on Ganna Walska Lotusland's visitor page matters more this week than it has all year. The garden's 2026 season closes on October 31 and reopens on February 17, 2027. Lotusland suggests booking three weeks ahead. As of today, October 5, that puts the recommended booking date for the season's final week roughly where the calendar sits now.
Almost everything else in Montecito this October lets you show up on the day or buy a ticket the week of: the Country Mart's pumpkin patch, Friday movie nights, Thursday concerts at Hahn Hall, and both Halloween events on Coast Village Road. Lotusland doesn't. If houseguests are coming, or you've been meaning to go back since spring, the garden is the one fixed point. The rest of the month can be arranged around it.
Counting what's actually left
Reservations run Wednesday through Saturday, with two entry times a day, 9:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Visits are timed. Morning guests must leave by 11:30 a.m. and afternoon guests by 3:30 p.m. October 31 falls on a Saturday, so after today the calendar has four Wednesday-to-Saturday blocks left:
- October 7 through 10
- October 14 through 17
- October 21 through 24
- October 28 through 31
That's 16 open days and 32 entry times before the gate closes for about three and a half months. The 2026 season started March 11, so the last four weeks are a small part of a run that began more than seven months ago.
Those days aren't all guaranteed. Lotusland says it occasionally closes during regular hours for special events, and it asks visitors with a specific date in mind to call the Reservations Office at 805-969-9990. Two October programs are on its calendar. "Well-being Wednesday – Yoga For Gardeners with Sean Haleen" runs October 21 from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. "Garden Conversations" on October 29 is for members only and already sold out.
The limit on visits is built in. Lotusland sits in a residential neighborhood, and Santa Barbara County restricts how many visitors and vehicles it can take each day. Each reservation includes one free vehicle ticket, which you choose when you book. If two households are sharing a car, the garden asks you to put the primary reservation holder's name in the comment field.
What the ticket covers this fall
Admission is $70 for adults and $35 for youth ages 3 to 12. Children two and under are free. Docent tours add $15, and a Museums for All rate of $5 is available. The docent tour covers about 2 miles and takes the whole two-hour visit. Lotusland recommends it for first-time visitors, which makes it a natural choice for out-of-town guests.
One part of the garden is closed right now. The Tropical Garden is shut while Lotusland finishes fire mitigation and water sustainability projects, and the garden hasn't given a reopening date. If you're bringing back someone who remembers that section from an earlier visit, tell them before they go.
Getting there trips people up too. The visitor entrance is near the intersection of Sycamore Canyon Road and Cold Spring Road and has no street address of its own. The administrative address that shows up online is for staff and deliveries only. Gates open 15 minutes before your entry time and close 15 minutes after it, and late arrivals may be turned away.
The rest of October runs on a weekly rhythm
With Lotusland booked, the rest of the month is easy to arrange, because Montecito's October events follow a weekly pattern. Hahn Hall at the Music Academy of the West, 1070 Fairway Road, has a performance nearly every Thursday, and event parking is free. The Montecito Country Mart shows a Pixar film under the twinkle lights every Friday from 6 to 7:30 p.m., with popcorn for kids and something bubbly for adults. Mention Movie Night at Rori's and a single scoop becomes a double. Lotusland fills the daytime from Wednesday to Saturday.
| Week | Thursday at Hahn Hall | Friday | Saturday |
|---|---|---|---|
| Oct 7–10 | Oct 8, 7:30 p.m.: "Tradition Transformed: Rachmaninoff, Britten & Baik" with Richard O'Neill and August Baik, $65–80 | Oct 9: Ratatouille at the Mart. Hudson Grace book signing with designer Sheldon Harte, 3:30 p.m. | Lotusland slots |
| Oct 14–17 | Oct 15, 7 p.m.: Camerata Pacifica, Rachmaninoff and Schubert | Oct 16: Finding Nemo at the Mart | Oct 17: Montecito Pie Baking Contest, 11 a.m.–1 p.m. |
| Oct 21–24 | Oct 22, 6:15 p.m.: Candlelight "A Haunted Evening of Halloween Classics" | Oct 23: Westmont Fall Orchestra Concert at Hahn Hall, 7 p.m., free. Finding Dory at the Mart | Lotusland slots. Westmont repeats its orchestra program at Page Hall on Sunday, Oct 25, 3 p.m. |
| Oct 28–31 | Oct 29, 7 p.m.: UCSB Arts & Lectures presents CelloGayageum | Oct 30: Coco at the Mart | Oct 31: Lotusland's final day and Halloween |
The Hudson Grace signing on October 9 celebrates The Refined Home, Sheldon Harte's first monograph. Antiquarian Lee Stanton and Ann Backen of Backen & Backen host the conversation, and RSVPs go to [email protected]. It ends at 5:30, half an hour before Ratatouille starts in the same courtyard.
October 17 favors the afternoon slot
The first annual Montecito Pie Baking Contest is a partnership between the Mart and Santa Barbara Culinary Experience. Pies are dropped off at 11 a.m. and winners are announced at 12:30. First place wins $100, second and third get gift cards, and there's a separate category for kids under 14. Miette is giving a baking demonstration, and Pacific Health Foods is selling pie by the slice during judging. Full rules are at montecitocountrymart.com/pie.
The timing decides which Lotusland slot works. Morning visitors can't leave the garden until 11:30, half an hour after pies are due, so a 9:30 reservation rules out entering. A 1:30 reservation works neatly: drop the pie off at 11, stay for the results, and get to Cold Spring Road by the 1:15 arrival time Lotusland recommends.
Halloween Saturday has three time blocks
October 31 brings three things together on the same day: Lotusland's last day of the season and two Halloween events on Coast Village Road. The schedule only allows a few combinations.
- 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The Mart's Halloween Spectacular. The costume contest starts at 11 at the Trading Post, and trick-or-treating runs through the Mart until 2.
- 3 to 6 p.m. Ghost Village Road takes over Coast Village Road for trick-or-treaters of all ages, and the Great Pumpkin Challenge asks visitors to guess the weight of a giant pumpkin in front of Renaud's.
- Lotusland's final slots. The 9:30 a.m. group leaves at 11:30 and the 1:30 p.m. group at 3:30.
A morning Lotusland visit means missing the 11 a.m. costume contest, but it still leaves the second half of the Mart's trick-or-treating and all of Ghost Village Road. An afternoon visit covers the Mart's full window and then catches the second half of Ghost Village Road after 3:30. Families who want to be at the costume contest at 11 should book the afternoon slot.
The Mart's honor-system heirloom pumpkin patch is open the whole month: choose a pumpkin and pay on the honor system. Picking one earlier in October takes care of the porch before the last weekend gets busy.
Where to eat in between
The newest table in the Upper Village is Ancora Osteria at 1483 East Valley Road, in the former Via Vai Trattoria & Pizzeria space. It opened in mid-August with handmade pasta, pinsa, and secondi. Noozhawk named Luca Crestanelli of S.Y. Kitchen as chef. Edhat reported that he opened it with his brother Francesco. The two outlets reported different opening hours, Thursday through Monday and Thursday through Sunday, so call ahead before a midweek dinner after a Lotusland afternoon.
Sally Boy's, Dave Cantin's pizza, market, and morning-coffee concept at 1080 Coast Village Road, isn't on this October's list. The latest local coverage, from early August, described an opening goal of before year-end rather than a confirmed date.
From early November through mid-February, this calendar gets much shorter. Lotusland is closed until February 17, 2027, and the Mart's pumpkin patch and Friday movie series both end with October.
Sandy Lipowski works on Coast Village Road, the same stretch that becomes Ghost Village Road on October 31. If guests this month start asking what a Montecito address is worth today, Sandy is happy to give a discreet, current answer. Request an Instant Home Valuation.
